Match report

AFC – DAMASCUS, Two second-half goals saw Iran book their place in the final round of qualifying for the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Syria at Al Abbasiyyin Stadium in Damascus on Saturday.

Gholamreza Rezaei gave the visitors the lead just after the hour mark before Mohsen Khalili sealed the points in the fifth minute of stoppage time and ensure Iran will remain top of Group Five when they face Kuwait in their final match on June 22.

Syria had the best chances in the first half and had their first sight of goal eight minutes into the game when Adel Abdullah s neat pass found Ziad Chabo in the area but his shot was off-target.

The hosts then came even closer to taking the lead after 16 minutes when Bakri Tarrab saw a cross deflected onto the left post by Iran defender Seyed Jalal Hosseini.

Syria continued to hold the upper hand and Lowai Shanko s shot from outside the box was eventually cleared by the Iran defence before Ali Daei s side had their first attempt on goal after 31 minutes but Ferydoon Zandi could only head straight at Syria goalkeeper Mosab Balhous when he met Javad Nekounam s free-kick.

Syria spurned another opportunity three minutes before the break when Aattef Jenniat was sent clear by a pass from Firas Al Khatib but he could not beat Seyed Mahdi Rahmati when one-on-one with the Iran keeper.

Iran came out with a more attacking mentality in the second half and Nekounam saw an effort saved by Balhous just four minutes in.

But they took the lead after 64 minutes when, following a quick counter attack, Rezaei beat three defenders before firing a powerful strike past Balhous.

Iran nearly doubled their advantage on 76 minutes but Masoud Shojaei s shot was too high Al Khatib struck a free-kick wide three minutes later.

Syria pressed for an equaliser but were caught out in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Khalili made his way into the area before beating Balhous with a low strike
