Match report
AFC - AL AIN, Ferydoon Zandi scored an early goal as Iran moved to the top of Group Five with a 1-0 win over United Arab Emirates at the Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium on Saturday.

Zandi s neat finish after only eight minutes was enough to give Ali Daei s side their first victory of the Asian World Cup qualifying campaign as they edged a point ahead of UAE and Syria at the top of the group with six points from four games.

Syria, who have a game in hand, visit Kuwait on Sunday night.

Iran were badly in need of a win after drawing their first three games but they enjoyed a tremendous start, taking the lead when Masoud Shojae s superb through ball released Zandi, who beat the UAE offside trap before lobbing the ball past the advancing Majed Naser.

The home side were stung into action and nearly levelled the score in the 14th minute when a powerful shot by Ismail Matar went just wide.

Matar was lively in attack for the UAE and went close again in the 35th minute as his attempt went over the crossbar.

Subait Khater had another opportunity for the hosts three minutes before the break, firing a free-kick over the crossbar.

The home team continued to apply the pressure early in the second half and Iran goalkeeper Seyed Mahdi Rahmati was called into action ten minutes after the break, blocking a fierce shot by substitute Ismail Al Hammadi.

Iran nearly doubled their advantage close to the hour as Javad Nekounam sent a header just over the crossbar and Zandi fired narrowly wide of the left upright.

They went close again in the 72nd minute when Gholamreza Rezaei received the ball from Haidar Alo Ali and shot wide.

The Emirates had their best chance for an equaliser five minutes from time when Matar’s volley from the edge of the area flew just past the post.

UAE kept up the pressure in the closing minutes but could find no way past the defence of the Iranians, who held on to the lead and leap-frogged their opponents into first place in the group.
