AFC – MANAMA, Ali Daei’s first match at the helm of the Iran national team ended in defeat as Team Melli went down 1-0 to Bahrain on Friday as both sides warmed-up for their next 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Mohamed Hussain scored the only goal of the friendly match in Manama when the defender volleyed home from close range after Abdulla Al Marzooqi headed Salman Issa’s corner into his path.

Iran’s disappointing night was compounded four minutes from full-time when they had Bolton Wanderers midfielder Andranik Teymourian sent off for a ‘professional foul’ on Abdulla Al Dakeel, fouling the Muharraq forward when he was through on goal.

Failure to find the net meant that Iran have not scored in open play since Teymourian’s 70th minute strike in the 2-0 win over Malaysia at the 2007 AFC Asian Cup in last July.

Daei, his country’s all-time leading scorer with 109 goals in 149 international games, must find a solution to Iran’s goal scoring crisis for the three-time Asian champions’ Group D World Cup qualifier against Kuwait on March 26, the same night Bahrain entertain Japan in Group B.
